National Express awards grant funding to Prisoner Support Services

Published: 29th November 2023

Prisoners in and around Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire will be supported to turn over a new leaf when they leave prison, reducing the risk of re-offending, thanks to a grant from the National Express Foundation.

The National Express Foundation has awarded Prisoner Support Services, a not-for-profit organisation, a grant of £2000. The organisation offers a holistic service for prisoners and prison leavers in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and nationwide for remotely-delivered services.

It helps prisoners access administrative support and provides access to CV writing and employment support, which empowers service users to take control of their own circumstances on release from prison.

The grant will help deliver personal and social development workshops for prisoners. The workshops will cover understanding well-being, developing a positive mindset, understanding positive relationships and independent living.

The funding comes following the recent launch of the new National Express 788 service connecting Peterborough with London Luton and Heathrow airports, reinforcing the transport operator’s commitment to supporting the communities it serves.

Since 2012, the National Express Foundation has provided more than £1.5 million of funding to community organisations that work alongside young people, helping them to develop key skills and gain valuable life experiences. The Foundation’s grant programme for 2023 received over 600 applications, with 32 being ultimately successful.

Kate Reynolds, Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications for UK, Germany and Ireland, said: “As a major public transport operator in the UK, we are passionate about supporting the communities we serve.

“We recognise the challenges that people coming out of prison face in accessing vital support and education. This support is essential for ensuring prisoners have a successful re-entry into their communities on their release from prison, so we’re pleased to be able to support such an important project.”

Helen Willson, Director of Prisoner Support Services, said: “This funding will allow us to present the workshops with another volunteer who is multi-lingual to reduce exclusion from language barriers and provide every person a certificate that can be added to their CV.

“I have no doubt it will make a huge difference to those who complete it, as it will build confidence to ask questions and access long-term support once released from custody. We will also have two representatives who will be able to provide support on the prison wings.”
