Children under 14 years of age are not permitted to travel without being accompanied throughout the journey by a responsible person aged 16 years or over.
Children aged 14 - 15 years old may travel unaccompanied, as from 5am, arriving at their booked destination no later than 10pm. Unaccompanied children will be asked for proof of age or a signed letter of permission from their parent/guardian. (sms or chat based messages are not permissible)

One infant aged 0-2 travels free when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. Additional infants aged 0-2 must be paid for. If you are travelling with more than 1 infant aged 0-2, please book the additional infant as 'Children (3-15).

1. What is Clearpay?

Clearpay is a payment service that lends customers a fixed amount of credit to make purchases instantly and then pay for them in 4 automatic instalments, made every 2 weeks, without any interest (late fees apply). Please use Clearpay responsibly.

The service is provided by Clearpay Finance Ltd. Clearpay Plans are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

2. How do I use Clearpay?

Select your journey and any extras on the National Express website and select Clearpay on the payment page.

You will be directed to the Clearpay website to register and provide payment details (Visa, Mastercard or Amex). If you’ve used Clearpay before, just log in to your Clearpay account.

3. Where is Clearpay available?

Clearpay is only available as a payment method on the National Express website, when making a journey booking in the journey planner. Therefore, if you wish to make an amendment or purchase any journey extras after your initial booking, you will need to use an alternative payment option.

Clearpay is not available to use for transactions made for any of the following products/ticket types available online:

  • Coachcards
  • Quick Issue tickets
  • Any purchases from Holidays by National Express

Clearpay is not available to use for transactions made through any of the following channels and an alternative payment method will need to be used for transactions made through these channels:

  • My Account (for amendments/extras)
  • Contact Centre
  • Third party agents & partners
  • Coach Stations
  • On Board & Handheld Ticketing devices

4. Who can use Clearpay?

Clearpay is only available to permanent UK residents aged 18+ (excluding Channel Islands) with a UK billing address.

Customers with international billing addresses will not be able to use Clearpay or create a Clearpay account.

5. How does the Clearpay payment schedule work?

Clearpay will split the total value of your order into 4 instalments payable every fortnight. The exact amounts and dates will be displayed for you to agree to before you confirm your purchase.

If you would like to make additional unscheduled payment before they are due, you may log into your Clearpay account to make your payments early. Clearpay will then adjust the amount owed accordingly.

You can log in to your Clearpay account anytime to view your payment schedule or make a payment before the next due date.

6. What if I can’t pay a Clearpay instalment?

Clearpay lends you a fixed amount of credit so you can pay for your purchase over 4 instalments, due every 2 weeks. Ensure you can make repayments on time. You must be 18+ and a permanent UK resident (excl Channel Islands).

Clearpay charges a £6 late fee for each late instalment and a further £6 if it’s still unpaid 7 days later. Late fees are capped at £6 for orders under £24 and the lower of £24 or 25% of the order value for orders over £24. Missed payments may affect your ability to use Clearpay in the future and your details may be passed onto a debt collection agency working on Clearpay's behalf.

7. Is there a limit to how much I can spend on a single Clearpay transaction?

Yes, your total purchase value (including add-on products and fees) must be between £1 and £1000 to use Clearpay.

Your maximum purchase value may be lower depending on factors such as being a new customer or your payment history. When you sign up to Clearpay you will be able to see how much you have available to spend by logging in to your Clearpay account.

8. Can I use discounts or voucher codes when paying with Clearpay?

Yes, you may also use discounts or voucher codes with Clearpay to pay for your ticket if they are used at time of purchase in the journey planner on the National Express website.

9. How do I cancel my journey or obtain a refund if I have purchased with Clearpay?

Any bookings made using Clearpay as the payment method will follow our existing National Express Terms and Conditions which can be found here.

National Express will process a ticket cancellation and action a refund. Please note, all refunds for purchases made using Clearpay as the payment method will be refunded by National Express direct to Clearpay. We cannot provide any cash refunds.

Clearpay will then complete the refund taking into account what instalment payments have been made. Please note that until National Express has processed the ticket cancellation and actioned the refund, you will be liable to continue to make your payments to Clearpay.

10. I am unhappy with the experience I have received with National Express. Do I need to continue making payments to Clearpay?

If you have received an unsatisfactory experience from us (National Express), please contact us using this form.

As part of your credit agreement with Clearpay Finance Ltd., you are obliged to keep paying the instalments scheduled unless agreed otherwise with Clearpay.
