Things to do in Canterbury

There are several top attractions waiting to be discovered on your Canterbury adventure. From well-known tourist sites to hidden gems, the city is a treasure trove of things to see and do.

Here’s our run-down of the best of Canterbury.

Canterbury Cathedral

No trip to Canterbury is complete without a visit to its historic cathedral, which has been an attraction for pilgrims and visitors alike since the Middle Ages. Packed with 11th century artefacts and complete with medieval stained-glass windows, you can explore by yourself or with a guide before taking a well-earned break in the café and shop.

Canterbury Cathedral opens and closes each day with the ringing of a 17th Century bell, so time your visit right to hear its spectacular chimes.

St Augustine’s Abbey

With so many tourist attractions to visit in Canterbury, it would be easy to overlook this one. But once you’ve seen Canterbury Cathedral, don’t miss St Augustine’s Abbey, the ancient monastery associated with the historic home of the Anglican Church. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, explore the ruins and old foundations of this extraordinary landmark. With an audio guide walking you through Roman, Saxon and Tudor history, a visit to St Augustine’s Abbey offers an immersive historical experience.

Take the experience to the next level by donning virtual reality headsets and discover how St Augustine’s would have looked in the 16th century.

The Marlowe Theatre

When it comes to performing arts and culture, The Marlowe is a Canterbury treasure. Following a redevelopment in 2011, the venue has become one of the country’s preeminent regional theatres, and is a great place to catch a show.

The Marlowe supports some of the best emerging writers in the country, and hosts touring national plays and musicals, so visitors are spoiled for choice. Winner of UK Theatre’s award for Most Welcoming Theatre in the South East, expect to find a friendly atmosphere.

Wingham Wildlife Park

For a family-friendly day out just a short distance from Canterbury, head to Wingham Wildlife Park.

Here you’ll find more than 200 animal species, making it one of the top zoos in the UK. Get up-close with one of the cutest animals in the world at the Red Panda Experience. If you’re feeling daring, book a Meet the Tigers session and encounter the big cats under the watchful eye of expert handlers.

Children will love the two large indoor and outdoor play areas, with lots of educational sessions from animal experts. You can also grab a bite to eat at one of the on-site restaurants.

Westgate Towers Museum & Viewpoint

New York has the Statue of Liberty, London has Big Ben, but Canterbury’s Westgate has far more pedigree. England’s largest surviving city gate, the imposing 16 metre-high structure dates from 1380.

The museum houses an eclectic collection including helmets, armour, handcuffs and manacles. While you’re there, explore the cells dating from 1830. Should you want something to eat, there’s The Pound Bar & Kitchen – they might even serve you porridge.

Finally, climb the battlements for a wonderful view of this ancient, English city.

Dane John Gardens

If you need to rest your limbs from all the sightseeing, head to Dane John Gardens for a Canterbury beauty spot.

Nestled by the city’s walls and with its beautiful lime trees, this former Roman cemetery-turned-public park is a perfect setting for relaxation.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the main city thoroughfares, the gardens have stunning views of Canterbury and the Kent countryside from the top of the mound. If you’re visiting on a family day out, the kids will love the play area. Time it right and you might even catch a live concert at the bandstand.
