The best things to do in Cardiff

Published 21 February 2020

The Welsh capital of Cardiff is a cultural hub full of so many amazing experiences, from well-known attractions to quirky hidden gems. In our recent trip to the city, we decided to discover these for ourselves and find the best things to do in Cardiff.

Medieval castles, historic record shops and the best burgers in Wales! Still interested? Then read on to see how we spent our recent trip to "The Diff."

Cardiff Arcades

1. Shop like a local

Cardiff is home to several beautiful and eccentric arcades. Each one is full of a great mix of independent shops, cafes, restaurants and more. With seven arcades across the city, you’ll be able to spend a great day browsing some of Cardiff’s best shops and even pick up a souvenir or two! Keep an eye out for the enchanting Magic and Mayhem, a shop dedicated to all things Harry Potter.

Cardiff Bay

 2. Head down to the Bay

No trip to "The Diff” is complete without heading down to the Bay. Recognisable by the innovative Millenium Centre building, Cardiff Bay is brimming with beautiful views, delicious eateries and the odd attraction. With over 30 restaurants you can enjoy a romantic meal whilst overlooking the water, or even head to the Glee Club for a laugh with friends, there’s plenty to do.

If you fancy finding your sea legs then the Open Boat is the perfect way to tour the bay on the water. On a short 20 minute trip, you can take in breathtaking views of the Bay and Harbour whilst feeling the sea wind in your hair. Titanic poses are optional...

Cardiff Castle

3. Get medieval at Cardiff Castle

Suit of armour up and head to Cardiff Castle for an afternoon full of medieval-themed fun. Walk the castle grounds learning about the amazing 2000 year history of the stronghold and of course climb the Norman Keep for a spectacular view of the city.

The Castle is also a great venue for events with many concerts and performances taking place within the grounds such as Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, stand-up comedy and more.

Entry to the castle building itself does require a ticket however you can wander around the castle grounds and explore the Norman Keep for free.

Spillers Records

4. Browse the world's oldest record shop

At over 100 years old Cardiff’s Spillers Records has been recognised as the oldest record shop in the world! Housed in the Queens Arcade, this Cardiff staple has stood the test of time and is a much-loved constant in the city.

With a huge encyclopaedia of music from all genres, you’ll be able to purchase a wide range of records, memorabilia and even clothing. Sounds good to us!

Spillers also hosts some amazing events with local bands regularly playing shows in store.

Grazing Shed

5. Taste the best burger in Wales

After all this exploring you’re going to need some food to keep you going and there’s no better place than the Grazing Shed! A burger joint with a difference, this spot thinks outside the box when it comes to filling your bellies. Known for their delicious combinations the Grazing Shed is a huge favourite with the locals and with burgers like the John Wayne, Argy Bargy and wasabi flavoured Yokozuna, you can see why!

Don’t worry our vegetarian and vegan friends you won’t miss out though as the Grazing Shed has a wide range of plant-based burgers that’s will tantalise your taste buds too.
