Exeter's hidden gems

Published - 17/01/2020

Exeter is a fantastic city to explore as there are so many hidden places to find and enjoy. Here are some of our favourites that’ll soon make you want to take the coach to Exeter and discover some gems of your own...

Bars & restaurants

Of course, everyone needs to know where to find the best food and drink first. So why not get to grips with both in one place?

The Fat Pig is a traditional and cosy pub space complete with an ever-changing menu of gastro classics and seasonal specialties. If that wasn’t enough, you can also accompany your food with a huge array of ales, spirits and whatever else tickles your taste buds! It’s a match made in foodie heaven.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a quiet spot to end your evening, Rendezvous Wine Bar offers a tempting selection of wines from across the globe, tied together with a rustic, yet sophisticated look and feel. A great spot for friends, family or a nightcap with someone special.

Walking & scenery

Lose yourself in a peaceful afternoon of walking along the River Exe and finding your own hidden gems along the way. A starting point of the popular Exeter Quay area will lead you down the river to more tranquil locations such as Belle Isle Park.

Don’t feel like going it alone? Not many people know but Exeter actually offers 16 free walking tours. Red Coat Guided Tours are a fantastic way to learn about the city’s culture with visits to historical landmarks, unusual spots, maritime areas and more.

Coffee shops

Once you’ve done all that walking you’ll need to rest your legs, and where else should you do that but at one of Exeter’s best-kept secrets?

Caffe Espresso is a bright and relaxed cafe with an abundance of tempting cakes, delicious lunch options and, of course, high-quality coffee. What sets it apart, however, is one particular table upstairs in the window overlooking Exeter Castle. It's a lovely setting to chat over a steaming mug and a plate of something tasty.

Shopping

Finally, you can’t leave Exeter without a little souvenir shopping! There are some great independent shops dotted around the city with plenty of unique products for you to take home.

Georgie & Flo is a lovely gift and homeware store, filled with specially selected jewellery, candles, ceramics and more. Meanwhile, Exeter Gin, the city’s premium Gin manufacturer, and Roly’s Fudge, an amazing family-run fudge company, should satisfy your taste buds until your next visit.
