National Express statement5 January 2007 - Issued at 19:00hrsNational Express is working closely with the emergency services to identify the cause of the coach accident on the M4 / M25 earlier this week. Our main priority at the moment is to assist those customers who still remain in hospital after the accident. When customers are released, we will be making arrangements, with their agreement, for them to complete their onward travel by the most suitable means. National Express has now withdrawn all 12 Double Deck coaches from service as a precautionary measure. This will enable them to undergo a thorough safety check by qualified engineers supplied by the manufacturer. Alternative single deck coaches are operating on these services and there has been no disruption to customers. All our coaches and drivers fully comply with all the current European legislation. In addition all coaches are subject to random checks by Government agencies to ensure their safety compliance. National Express also uses the services of an independent specialist to make further checks. All our vehicles are fitted with seat belts, a speed limiter that restricts the maximum speed to 62mph (100kph) and tachograph that records information about both the coach and driver. National Express has always given customer safety the highest priority. We are the UK’s largest scheduled coach operator and we currently operate over 500 coaches a day to over 1,000 different UK destinations, carrying over 16 million customers a year.
