Things to do in Chester

Chester is a city where history comes alive at every turn, from Roman ruins to mediaeval streets. The famous Rows , unique two-tiered shopping galleries dating back to the 13th century, offer a shopping experience you won't find anywhere else in the world. The city's compact size makes it perfect for exploring on foot, with Chester Cathedral, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the picturesque River Dee all within easy walking distance.

Chester Zoo, one of the UK's best-loved attractions, is just a short bus ride from the city centre. With historic walls to walk, fascinating museums to explore, and charming riverside paths to stroll, Chester delivers something special for every visitor.

Stay in the know: Savvy tip for Chester!

Take a walk along Chester's ancient city walls - the most complete Roman walls in Britain. They offer stunning views across the city and you can complete the entire 2-mile circuit for free. Stop off at the Eastgate Clock, one of the most photographed landmarks in England after Big Ben!

Perfect for:

History enthusiasts exploring Roman heritage and mediaeval architecture
Weekend shoppers discovering the unique Rows and boutique stores
Families seeking affordable getaways to Chester Zoo and riverside walks

For great value accommodation, try Bunkum Backpackers in the heart of the city - perfect for budget travellers who want to be close to all the action. Travelodge Chester Central offers reliable comfort at reasonable prices, while the Mitchell's of Chester provides boutique charm without the luxury price tag, especially if you book ahead.

Venture down to the Roman Gardens tucked away near the city walls - an open-air museum displaying authentic Roman columns and stonework that most visitors walk straight past. Another treasure is St John's Church ruins at the end of Watergate Street, offering a peaceful spot with fascinating Norman architecture and a secret view that locals cherish.
