City breaks you’ll definitely post about

City breaks you’ll definitely post about

Ah, autumn in Britain. The days get shorter, the drizzle gets drizzlier, and your neighbour has already started talking about putting the heating on. Sounds like the perfect time to escape, doesn’t it? Luckily for you, National Express is here to glide you comfortably (and dryly, unlike your walk to the train station) straight to the airport. Where you go next is entirely up to you but may we suggest a few rather excellent city breaks?

Seville – For sunshine and sensible shoes

Seville

Seville is what happens when you take Britain’s summer and actually make it good. Think cobbled streets, tapas you don’t have to microwave, and enough orange trees to make your morning juice look pitiful. You’ll also need a sturdy pair of shoes because this city was designed by someone who clearly hated heels.

Ghent – For beer and bragging rights

Ghent

Bruges? Too obvious. Brussels? Too bureaucratic. Ghent is where the Belgians keep the really good stuff. Canals, medieval architecture, and a beer list longer than your uncle’s story about the M6. It’s also got fewer tourists, so you can smugly tell people you’ve “discovered the real Belgium.”

Gdańsk – For history and herring

Gdansk

Poland’s prettiest port city offers pastel-coloured facades, a sprinkling of maritime history, and more amber jewellery than you can politely admire. It’s also excellent for anyone who enjoys Baltic sea breezes and pickled fish,  which, after a few local drinks, you definitely will.

Boston (USA) – For tea and twinning

Boston

Yes, the one with skyscrapers, baseball, and a suspiciously enthusiastic tea party. Boston, Massachusetts offers leafy walks, colonial charm, and a fun game of spotting which street names you already have back home. (Spoiler: most of them.) It’s a little slice of New England that feels just familiar enough to be comfortable, but just different enough to make you wonder why your local doesn’t serve clam chowder.

Valletta – For sun and slightly more sun

Valletta

Malta’s capital city is basically a UNESCO World Heritage site that someone left in the middle of the Mediterranean. Golden stone streets, fortresses galore, and weather that laughs in the face of your British raincoat. Even in autumn, you’ll wonder why you bothered packing sleeves.

Cologne – For cathedrals and Christmas (almost)

Yes, Cologne has a cathedral. No, you won’t miss it, it’s enormous. But beyond the gothic grandeur, this city offers riverside strolls, chocolate museums (finally, a museum worth attending), and, if you time it right, the start of Germany’s Christmas market season. Consider it festive pre-gaming.
