CHICKS provides free respite breaks to disadvantaged children in the UK, giving them a week away from their difficult circumstances where they can make positive childhood memories.
CHICKS was founded in 1992 by two teachers from Devon who wanted to help the many disadvantaged children in the UK that had never had the joy of a holiday.
They set up a charity to provide these young people with the chance to forget the challenges they are facing at home, allowing them to enjoy a carefree week, where they could run through fields, ride horses across the moors and swim in the sea. More than anything, it gave them the chance to just be children.
Over the last 25 years, CHICKS has provided a week of adventure, fun and laughter to over 15,000 children at our 3 countryside retreats in Devon, Cornwall and Derbyshire.
Through the provision of days out and new opportunities in a safe, family-style environment, these children have experienced a break full of positivity and excitement, where they can make new friends and receive the care, attention, reassurance and encouragement that may be missing from their daily lives.
CHICKS is incredibly excited to be starting a fantastic new partnership with National Express.
Throughout 2018, National Express are donating free coach travel for every child to attend a CHICKS break, a total of almost 900 free return journeys, as well as discounted travel for all volunteers.
The difference this will make will be truly transformative: thanks to National Express, there are now no barriers to a child attending a CHICKS break. This will enable the children in most need to benefit from a week away from their difficult circumstances, giving them the chance make happy childhood memories.
National Express are also enabling CHICKS to provide every child attending a break in 2018 with a Memory Bag, containing small mementos of their week including diaries, photo compilations and certificates. In addition, National Express staff will be supporting CHICKS through volunteering, whether on a respite break, at a fundraising event, or through helping to decorate and maintain the three CHICKS retreats.
