Main character March: Because you might as well be the lead

Published: 10th March 2026

March in the UK is a curious time. Winter is technically ending, spring is technically beginning, and the weather is technically doing whatever it wants. It’s the perfect moment for a small adventure, mostly because you’re unlikely to be competing with half the country for it.

Which brings us to Main Character March: the idea that, just for a little while, you treat your own life like the plot of a travel film. Not a dramatic blockbuster, necessarily. Think more understated British indie: slightly chaotic weather, good coffee, and an unexpectedly great day somewhere new.

With our hundreds of routes across the UK, it’s surprisingly easy to give yourself a starring role.

Take yourself on a trip (Yes, just you)

Solo travel used to be seen as mildly eccentric. Now it’s widely accepted as a very sensible way to travel, mostly because it means you get to do exactly what you want.

You can explore slowly, change plans halfway through the day, or spend 40 minutes choosing a bakery without anyone asking if you’re finished yet.

Cities like York, Bath and Edinburgh are particularly good for wandering without an agenda. They’re full of historic streets, independent shops and places that reward aimless exploring.

Which is exactly the point.

The journey is part of the story

Travel films always include a journey montage for a reason. It’s where the thinking happens.

Travelling with us gives you the rare luxury of time where you don’t have to do very much. No traffic, no navigation, no finding somewhere to park in a city centre built several centuries before cars existed.

Just a seat, a window and several hours to listen to music, read a book or stare thoughtfully into the distance like someone who definitely has their life together.

Leave some room for serendipity

It’s tempting to plan every moment of a trip. But the most memorable parts are usually the ones you didn’t plan at all.

That café you found because you took the wrong street.
The vintage shop you wandered into “just for a minute”.
The viewpoint you discovered because you followed a slightly confusing sign.

Cities like Bristol and Liverpool are particularly good for this kind of accidental exploring. Both reward curiosity, mild detours and the occasional questionable navigational decision.

Make the ordinary feel slightly cinematic

You don’t need a dramatic itinerary for a trip to feel memorable.

A walk through a new city. A seaside sunset. A long lunch somewhere you’d never normally go.

Even places you think you know well like Manchester or Brighton can feel completely different when you visit with no particular reason other than “it seemed like a good idea at the time”.

Which, to be fair, is the motivation behind many excellent trips.

Your main character moment awaits

March might not be the obvious time for travel. Which is precisely why it works.

There are fewer crowds, slightly better prices, and the quiet satisfaction of doing something spontaneous while everyone else is still waiting for summer.

So if you’re looking for a small plot twist in your routine, consider this your cue.

Pick a destination. Book the ticket. Let the story unfold.

And if nothing particularly dramatic happens, that’s fine too.
The best British adventures rarely look dramatic, they’re just quietly brilliant.
