End of an era - Digbeth Coach Station closes

Final coach leaves Digbeth as new services start from Birmingham Central

National Express is marking the end of an era at Digbeth Coach Station after nearly 50 years, when the last coach service will leave the station today (12 November 2007). All services will now move to a new temporary site - Birmingham Central - situated across Digbeth High Street at the former Volkswagen showroom on Oxford Street, while the £15million redevelopment takes place.

The last coach - the 777 service to Luton Airport - will leave Digbeth Coach Station at 07:30. The first coach from the new station - the 08:00 420 service to London Victoria - marks the opening of the £1.4million temporary site.

People will have a further opportunity to say final farewells to Digbeth coach station at a free party being held at the old Digbeth site on Saturday 17 November.

Paul Bunting, chief executive at National Express, comments: "The last coach leaving Digbeth Coach Station truly marks the end of an era, but it is also an exciting time as it heralds that start of a new coach station in Birmingham. The party on 17 November - which is open to everybody - will be the final activity at the station before the redevelopment begins, so we are asking people who have memories of the old coach station to come along and say goodbye.

"We also want to remind customers travelling from 08:00 on 12 November that their coaches will now depart from the temporary coach station across Digbeth High Street. If customers have any questions, they should call our helpline - 08705 808080 - or visit the website - www.nationalexpress.com."

The party on Saturday 17 November takes place at the coach station from 11am until 5pm, and will include appearances from special guests Ed Doolan (BBC WM) and Ashley Blake (BBC Midlands Today) plus live music, free entertainment including a giant bouncy castle, face painters, magicians and stilt walkers, as well as arts and craft stalls from local people including jewellery makers, handmade Christmas gifts and traditional homemade food.
