The Nutcracker, Grand Theatre & Opera House, Leeds
Currently in the final stages of preparation, the Northern Ballet Theatre is gearing itself up for a new production of the classic ballet, The Nutcracker.
From November 27th to December 8th 2007 - not including Mondays - the theatre will take in the ballet penned by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
The piece has backdrops designed by Charles Cusick Smith, with costumes by choreographer and director David Nixon with the ballet being set Regency period.
Described by the ballet as "a treat for the whole family", the performance includes The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and The Waltz of Flowers as the audience is captivated by the rich imaginings of Clara and her Nutcracker doll.
A fairy-tale ballet in two acts and three tableaux, The Nutcracker is based on an ETA Hoffman story, written in 1816 and was composed by Tchaikovsky from 1891 to 1892 and has become a world-renowned and loved, especially at Christmastime.
