The Art of Wrapping, Brighton Museum

An exhibition of the ancient art of furoshiki - the ancient Japanese art of wrapping and carrying objects with decorative textiles - is currently showing at the Brighton Museum.

The Art of Wrapping show details the evolution of the art from its origins 400 years ago to modern takes on the craft featuring cloths made from recycled plastic bottles.

Among the highlights are two furoshiki especially commissioned from Hiroyuki Shindo, one of Japan's leading artists, as well as designs incorporating the popular cartoon strip character Snoopy and an innovative furoshiki manufactured with the words of a song raised in Braille.

The art-form has recently enjoyed something of a resurgence in Japan, with new designs reflecting the environmental concerns of the day through depicting endangered animals.

The free-to-attend show is on now and runs until August 2008.
