Shibboleth, Tate Modern, London

Doris Salcedo is the latest artist to take on the challenge of the huge exhibition space of the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall.

Rather than fill the space with a conventional installation, Salcedo's exhibit takes the form of a giant crack in the floor called Shibboleth which is intended to subvert the gallery's claim to grandeur and make us question Western ideas of progress.

The space has previously hosted landmark exhibits such as Amish Kapoor's The Flaying Of Marsyas and Olafur Eliason's The Weather Project, which saw visitors lying on the floor en masse as though they were at a sun-drenched beach.

Tate Modern is also currently hosting a Millais exhibition featuring some of the artist's most iconic pieces including his depictions of the Shakesperian heroines Ophelia and Mariana.

Address: Tate Modern, Bankside, London, SE1 9TG.
