What's on guide
ArtsFest, Birmingham
Art lovers who are planning a break in the West Midlands this autumn could find lots to enjoy in Birmingham.
The city is set to host the annual ArtsFest event in September 2009, which celebrates everything from dance to theatre.
Visitors can also enjoy performing arts and theatre this year, with the added bonus that every event is free to attend.
This year's theme is anniversaries and celebrations, so those attending the ArtsFest will find works relating to many key dates that are being marked in 2009.
For instance, this year is the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, whose theory on evolution still provokes strong debate today.
2009 is also the 50th anniversary of iconic brands such as Mini, Motown and the Barbie doll, so visitors can expect to see this reflected in some of the works on offer.
Since the ArtsFest is taking place at venues all over the city, people who are on trips to Birmingham could also take the opportunity to see its numerous attractions, such as the Ikon art gallery, the Jewellery Quarter, the National Indoor Arena and buildings of architectural interest like St Chad's Cathedral.
