Things to do in Norwich

Norwich is a vibrant university city with tons of shopping, nightlife and leisure opportunities. There's plenty to do in Norwich, from galleries and museums to historic sites.

Here’s our verdict on the best things to see during your visit to this beautiful, laid-back city.

Norwich Cathedral

One of the top tourist attractions in Norwich is the stunning Anglican cathedral, which is among the most significant Anglo-Norman churches in England. The building traces its history back to 1096, and is notable for its Gothic vaulting and beautiful stonemasonry.

The majestic spire is the country’s second highest after Salisbury, and the history is there for all to see. Take the one-hour guided tour for the full experience. A donation is requested from visitors, but with no strict ticket price, it’s potentially one of the most affordable things to do in Norwich.

If you need to unwind, the Refectory café is an ideal spot for lunch and coffee, while the Herb and Japanese Gardens offer a restful retreat before the day’s explorations really begin. A visit to Norwich Cathedral is a great way to start your sightseeing tour of the city.

Elm Hill

Beautiful Elm Hill is a cobbled lane in the heart of the city. Here, you’ll find gorgeous medieval buildings with thatched roofs and cutesy shops selling everything from cuddly bears and antiques to collectables. It’s the perfect location for taking photographs on your Norwich sightseeing jaunt.

A special trail map can be purchased from the Cathedral Quarter to help with your exploration. One of the best places to visit is The Britons Arms, dating back to 1420, which is now a popular coffee house and restaurant and is often used as a film location.

The Norfolk Broads

Norfolk is a largely rural county, so if you fancy venturing beyond Norwich itself, there is plenty to see in the great outdoors. The famous Norfolk Broads are a popular tourist attraction, much-loved by those who decide to hire a boat or cycle by the waterside of this distinctive marshy landscape.

The Broads are a haven for birdwatchers, wildlife lovers and those with an adventurous spirit, with 125 miles of unspoilt waterways to discover. The Broads have more waterways than Venice and Amsterdam, but without the crowds. If you’re in the mood to explore, the Bure Valley Railway is a fantastic kids’ attraction and a wonderful way to observe the Broadland countryside from the comfort of your window seat.

Elsewhere, Thetford Forest is a beautiful woodland retreat suitable for cycling and walking, or you may wish to visit the magnificent stately homes of Sandringham and Holkham Hall.

Norwich Castle

A beautifully preserved 12th-century Keep overlooking the city centre, Norwich Castle is definitely one of the city’s top sightseeing attractions. On your visit, book a guided tour around the battlements and see the dungeons for yourself.

Ascend the 62 steps of the Norman staircase to take in the incredible 360 degree-views of Norwich from the top. Those who love military history will be fascinated by the Anglo-Norman fortification while, if that’s not your cup of tea, the on-site gallery even contains an antique teapot collection.

Young children have plenty of activities to enjoy, including a special bear hunt which you can book on request. For the bigger picture, you may alternatively wish to take in the view of Norwich Castle perched on its hillside from the sightseeing bus.

Norwich Theatre Royal

For more than 250 years, Norwich Theatre Royal has been a major cultural hub. More than 400,000 people visit the venue every year, so it’s undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Norwich.

The 1,300-seat theatre has a wide range of shows on offer, from contemporary drama and grand operas to family musicals. If you’re yet to decide what to see in Norwich, check out the theatre’s packed calendar of events and take your pick from a diverse programme of performances. From West End transfers to comedy and children’s shows, there are plenty of acts on the bill to suit all tastes.
