Nicholas Nickleby, Birmingham Hippodrome
David Edgar's 1980 Royal Shakespeare Company adaptation of Dickens comic masterpiece Nicholas Nickleby comes to Birmingham this October for a short run.
Divided into two parts and performed by a 27-strong company of actors, this unique theatrical event is as epic in scope as the 800-page original novel.
The play tells the story of the Nickleby family (Nicholas, his mother, and his sister Kate), left penniless by the death of the Mr Nickleby, who turn to Nicholas's uncle Ralph Nickleby to help relieve their poverty.
However, Nicholas is subsequently sent to tutor at Dotheboys Hall, where he rails against some of Victorian society's social ills - not least the ill treatment of Smike by his with his guardian Squeers.
Performances of both parts run from October 23th to 27th.
Address: Birmingham Hippodrome Hurst Street Birmingham B5 4TB.
