Diwali in London
Trafalgar Square will be the main focus of London's Diwali celebrations this year on October 28th.
The Hindu Festival of Light will see the Square transformed into a mini Mumbai complete with special performances, food sellers as well as floating candles placed in the numerous fountains in the area. A stage will also be constructed to allow performances from numerous local dance groups. As dusk falls, hundreds of glow in the dark balloons are also released.
Diwali is seen as marking the start of new beginnings and the use of light is said to celebrate the joy and festivity as well as a sign of good beating the darkness of evil.
The whole festival is timed to coincide with the new moon (the darkest night of the month) and it is hoped that the special events organised by the Mayor of London and the Diwali in London Group will encourage more people to take part in this spectacular celebration.
