Back to the Future: Sir Basil Spence 1907-1976
The career of one of Scotland's most-renowned modern architects Sir Basil Spence is showcased in an ongoing exhibition at Edinburgh's National Gallery Complex.
Having learned his craft under Edward Lutyens, Spence's venerable reputation rests chiefly upon his iconoclastic, groundbreaking design for Coventry Cathedral, which was rebuilt having been heavily bombed in a WW2 air raid.
His work also included barracks at Hyde Park in London as well as the construction and design of high-rise developments in the deprived Gorbals area of Glasgow.
In 1960 he was recognised for his achievements with a knighthood and also served as president of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Back to the Future - Sir Basil Spence 1907-1976 runs until February 19th 2008.
Other shows currently on display at the National Gallery Complex include a look at the work of Industrial Revolution-era engineer Thomas Telford and a retrospective of artist Joan Eardley.
Address: National Gallery Complex, Belford Rd, Edinburgh, EH4 3DR.
